Microneedling & PRP Q & A

What are platelet-rich plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) features a concentration of healing factors derived from your own blood which is obtained from your arm in a conventional blood draw. The provider then spins the blood in a centrifuge to separate the components and retrieve the platelets. Platelets are blood cells that contain lots of growth factors and cytokines to stimulate healing of your skin.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a facial treatment that uses a pen-like device equipped with tiny needles. When the device glides over your face, it pokes dozens of micro holes – not visible to the eye. These tiny, controlled wounds trigger your body’s natural healing capacity to repair your skin with new collagen and revitalized skin cells.

What are the benefits of combining microneedling with PRP?

When combined together, microneedling and PRP amplify your skin’s ability to heal itself. The microneedling session leaves your skin receptive to the application of topical serums, including PRP. When the PRP is applied after microneedling, your skin better absorbs the PRP to promote cellular regeneration and healing. Your body produces more collagen and elastin in response to a PRP microneedling session, which can then add volume, improve texture, and decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Who is a good candidate for PRP with microneedling?

People who want to improve the look of their skin in terms of texture are ideal candidates for PRP with microneedling. The procedure is an alternative to invasive surgery or laser procedures. When you want a natural solution to acne scarring as well as lines and wrinkles, choose PRP with microneedling.

Recovery is relatively short – you need only lie low for one day and can return to work the next day if you choose. Following a session, you may have some redness and irritation, which usually resolves in about 72 hours. It’s recommended that you avoid vigorous activity that causes sweating for 2-3 days after PRP with microneedling.

Keep yourself out of the sun, as your skin is temporarily extra sensitive to ultraviolet rays. Dr. Becker and his staff can instruct you about how to care for your skin immediately after the PRP with microneedling session.
