The Different Chemical Peels We Offer and Which One Is Best for You

When it comes to versatility in addressing common skin concerns, there’s not much that beats the humble chemical peel. Long a mainstay of skin rejuvenation treatments, chemical peels still have a place among your options for renewing your complexion.
Peels are a significant part of our service offerings at Rinnova Skin & Body in Boulder, Colorado. We recommend a wide range of peels to our patients for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as treating uneven skin tone and sun damage.
Today, we look at some of the peels we commonly use and share tips for choosing the best peel products for you.
Chemical peels: An overview
Simply, a peel is a chemical solution applied to the skin to remove layers of skin, exposing newer skin surfaces beneath. In practice, though, peels come in a variety of strengths targeting specific results. There’s no one-size-fits-all chemical peel treatment.
As a chemical exfoliation process, peels provide skin improvement benefits like:
- Reducing signs of skin aging from sun damage
- Improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Treating some types of acne
- Reducing the appearance and depth of minor scarring
- Easing skin pigmentation problems like sun spots and freckling
Peels provide even more benefits, including the removal of precancerous scale patches called actinic keratosis. Chances are, if you have a complexion goal, there’s a peel that can help you achieve it.
The different chemical peels we offer
Chemical peels are grouped by depth or strength into three categories:
Light peels are sometimes called “lunchtime” peels, since you can schedule a midday appointment and return to your regular day, since there’s little or no time needed to recover.
Medium peels penetrate more deeply, producing more dramatic results from each treatment. These peels strip away more skin tissue, requiring time for regrowth, after which you notice greater improvements.
Deep chemical peels provide the most dramatic improvements since they renew your skin at the deepest levels. But, they also carry the longest recovery times.
The pretreatment process may stretch for up to two months before the peel application. Often, deep peels are regarded as one-time-only treatments.
Peels we use most often include:
Salicylic acid
This light peel with minimal downtime gently exfoliates and cleans your skin while also treating acne and reducing lines, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage.
Phenol (carbolic acid)
This deep peel gives good results with wrinkles, minor scars, and actinic keratosis.
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)
This peel is available in light to medium strength. TCA peels concentrate on the skin’s outer layers to improve its appearance.
Mandelic acid
This gentle alpha hydroxy peel cleans pores and exfoliates while also stimulating collagen synthesis for complexion improvements.
Pyruvic acid
Another collagen stimulator, this peel produces deep results with minimal downtime, though it may not be compatible with all skin types.
